Oh, my, goodness! Beautiful colors, vibrant tones, wall-hugging thin. What more can you want from a television? Oh, yeah, we want High Definition TV (HDTV) as well as standard NTSC television. We also want computer-compatibla resolutions. And, we want cheap. We don't get that last one, with the plasma television. To enjoy the looks, we have to open our wallets. Save some big bucks by picking a 42-inch model instead of a 50-inch model — the 42-inch ones are only about 40% of the big guy's price. Plasma screen life is a critical factor in this expensive purchase.
Once step back from the plasma screen TV is the LCD Screen TV. Almost all the same features are available here at a lower price. The biggest "miss" is the brightness. LCD screens have fluorescing tubes behind the actual liquid crystal display. It is not nearly as bad as trying to read a PDA or color-screen cellphone in sunlight, but if the room is really brighter, the colors may seem slightly faded. On the other hand, you should see significantly better life from an LCD screen than from a plasma screen. The LCD screen TV is also going to be cheaper. Also, LCD screen televisions are also available in relatively small sizes. Once you buy the big guy, you might just have to change the TV in the bedroom, also!
Want a bigger screen without going the plasma or LCD television route? For over 10 years, you have been able to purchase rear-projection televisions. Mine is a 52-inch Hitachi Ultravision — state of the art in 1996 and far behind that now. But, the 52" size makees up for that! If you want a really big screen, today's route typically uses a computer driven system, displaying through a LCD projector or a DLP projector. Get a TV screen the size of your wall!
There were only two main problems with the classic television sets. First, as they got larger, the prices went up almost exponentially. Second, and of more importance to our Significant Others, as the screen size increased, the depth of the unit increased almost in proportion. Classic CRT-based televisions are great in the 12-inch to 32-inch range. Want something bigger? Then, go to the Plasma, LCD or Projection Television systems.
